Yayasan Permakultur Kalimantan

At A Glance: Yayasan Permakultur Kalimantan (YPK), located in Central Kalimantan, teaches and provides support to local people so they can cease reliance on cheap, destructive crops and return instead to sustainable forms of agriculture. It is based on three core principles of care: for people, the earth and our collective future. Programs include organic gardening, regenerative agriculture, farming and land management practices. 
Goals: Train rural farmers using the “permaculture” approach. This brings together nature, modern science and traditional knowledge to provide a culturally-appropriate growing system. This, in turn, allows local people to adopt agricultural practices that are sustainable and do as little harm to sensitive jungle ecosystems as possible. 
Results: YPK oversees many workshops and training courses. The organization has successfully trained many local farmers and community leaders in the following skill areas:

  • Compost-making
  • Nursery establishment
  • Irrigation ditches
  • Pesticide reduction/elimination 
  • Seed banking
  • Indigenous plant cultivation
  • Kitchen gardens
